Indian government has announced a comprehensive new urea policy in 2015 which will be in effect for a period of 4 years. The policy aims to increase efficiency and to reduce subsidy burden of the government, and also expected to be environmental friendly. The government have also approved a gas pooling policy which enables fertilizer companies to get a uniform price for natural gas. It has enabled 100% neem coated urea which reduces natural gas consumption and also make it environmental friendly. It also makes Urea less susceptible to pilferage by other industries. Further, there will not be increase in price to benefit farmers. The above measure will result in reduction in imports. Currently, India is importing around 8 million tonnes of urea which meets roughly one-fifth of Indian demand.
